NEWBEY Horace

Compiled by Gordon Freegard based on research by Merilyn Stewart

George Horace Newbey, known as Horace,  (1901-1973) was the son of Samuel John Newbey and Annie Rebecca Heffer, was born in 1901. Horace was described as “man who could turn his hand to anything”.
Esther Whitt was born in 1904. While working at "Sunny Side" farm at Kojonup she met Horace. They were married  on 5th April 1926 in Katanning, Western Australia. Esther was the sister of Martha (known as Nellie) who married Charlie Denny and lived at Pallinup Soldier Settlement.
They had three children: a daughter Esther Doreen and two sons, Horace George, referred to as George, and William.
Horace worked as manager of Woodyarrup Stud. During their time at Woodyarrup, like other families, they constructed a tennis court. As Pallinup was the location of a soldier settlement, there were over 20 other families living close by so these courts were in constant use. There was a strong tennis club at Pallinup School and the family frequently traveled to Gnowangerup, Broomehill, and Katanning for tennis matches.

Horace purchased a demo T-Model Ford, which was converted into a ute. This vehicle was later used for family holidays. Their first camping trip to Bremer Bay occurred in 1928, during a time when the area remained largely untouched, characterized by a few dirt tracks. Other families regularly camped there and it was a great little community that spent carefree days together. One year they even took a milking cow - no shortage of milk!
The children attended school in Pallinup before advancing to Katanning, where Horace obtained employment at Richardson's Store.

In 1963, the couple retired and relocated to their beloved Bremer Bay, after having been farm manager at Woodyarrup Stud, Broomehill, for many years. Horace had suffered ill health for some years and sadly passed away in 1973 reaching nearl 72 years old.
